The jay is a medium-sized bird (around 34 cm) and belongs in the family of the corvids (ravens, crows, etc). It is brick-coloured, but its wings are of a beautiful blue and black with white patches. On the top of its head it has black spots/stripes. Over the white neck it has a black area around its beak which resembles a moustache. The jay is an omnivorous bird with a large and strong beak with which it can break nuts and acorns.
Where and when to spot it
The jay is a permanent resident in our area. During the last years its populations are growing larger. It can be observed in areas with trees, such as forests, copses, large parks and in fields with large trees.
