The blackcap is of dark grey colour on its back and a lighter grey on the underside. The male - as the name says - has a black cap on the head. On the contrary, in the female the top part of the head is brownish. It is a small-sized bird (around 14 cm). It has a thin beak and feeds on insects and seeds.
Where and when to spot it
The blackcap visits our area only in autumn and winter, but during these seasons it is extremely common in gardens, parks and fields. It usually sits hidden in the foliage of trees and shrubs. It has a very beautiful song, but we rarely hear it during winter. What we do hear, instead, are its calls with which it announces its presence.
